Obiang is the world's longest-serving president, having seized power from his uncle in 1979, and his son Teodorín serves as vice president and presumed heir. Oil made the small state one of Africa's richest per capita on paper, but wealth is concentrated and corruption cases against the family have been pursued in French and US courts. Opposition activity is effectively criminalised.
