Abiy Ahmed, a Nobel Peace laureate for the 2018 Eritrea rapprochement, went on to fight the devastating 2020-22 Tigray war and continuing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia. Africa's second most populous state completed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a source of lasting tension with Egypt, and presses for Red Sea port access. The June 2026 election returned the Prosperity Party with an overwhelming majority.
