US forces captured Nicolás Maduro in Caracas on 3 January 2026 and flew him to New York to face drug-trafficking charges, an operation without modern precedent against a sitting government. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has since exercised the presidency for the chavista state, whose institutions remain in place. The country's long collapse has driven roughly eight million people abroad, and the path to any internationally recognised election remains undefined.
