Bukele's sweeping gang crackdown under a state of exception in force since 2022 has imprisoned more than one percent of the population, collapsing homicide rates while drawing due-process criticism from rights groups. A 2025 constitutional amendment removed the ban on consecutive re-election and lengthened terms, letting Bukele seek office indefinitely. He remains among the most popular leaders in the hemisphere.
