Youth-led protests over chronic water and power cuts swelled in late 2025 until the elite CAPSAT army unit sided with demonstrators and Andry Rajoelina fled the country. Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as president of a refoundation transition, drawing African Union suspension. One of the world's poorest countries, Madagascar has now seen four unconstitutional changes of power since 1972.
