Tokayev consolidated power after the deadly January 2022 unrest that ended Nursultan Nazarbayev's behind-the-scenes rule, then reset his own tenure under a single-term constitution running to 2029. Central Asia's largest economy exports oil through Russian pipelines while courting Chinese, European and Gulf investment in a professed multi-vector foreign policy. Political liberalisation has remained largely cosmetic.
