CCM and its predecessor have governed continuously since independence, making it one of Africa's longest-ruling parties. The 2025 election was preceded by the treason prosecution of opposition leader Tundu Lissu and the barring of Chadema and ACT-Wazalendo, and followed by deadly protests and an internet shutdown. Samia, the country's first woman president, had earlier been credited with easing the Magufuli era's restrictions.
