The Gnassingbé family has ruled Togo since 1967, and the 2024 switch to a parliamentary system converted Faure Gnassingbé's presidency into an unlimited premiership-style role chosen by his parliamentary majority. Protests against the arrangement in mid-2025 were met with a crackdown in which several people died. The opposition calls the new constitution an institutional coup.
