Mahamat Déby was installed by generals hours after his father Idriss Déby, ruler for 30 years, was killed at the front in 2021, and he retained power through a disputed 2024 election. His main challenger turned prime minister, Succès Masra, was later imprisoned. Chad ended its defence pact with France in 2024, closing a chapter of French military presence in the Sahel, while hosting vast numbers of refugees from Sudan's war.
