The Assad family's half-century rule ended in December 2024 when opposition forces led by Ahmed al-Sharaa took Damascus, and a March 2025 constitutional declaration set a five-year transition. Western sanctions were rolled back and Syria has re-entered regional diplomacy, but sectarian massacres on the coast and fighting in Suwayda exposed the transition's fragility. Reconstruction needs after 14 years of war are estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
