War between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023 has produced the world's largest displacement crisis, with famine declared in parts of the country and atrocities documented on both sides. The RSF's capture of El Fasher in late 2025 consolidated its grip on Darfur, where it has proclaimed a rival government. The army-backed administration operates from Port Sudan with Khartoum in ruins.
