Putin has dominated Russia since 2000, and 2020 constitutional changes allow him to remain president to 2036. The full-scale war against Ukraine launched in 2022 has militarised the economy, deepened repression at home and severed most ties with the West. Alexei Navalny's death in an Arctic prison in 2024 marked the effective end of organised domestic opposition.
