The junta deposed elected president Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023 and has kept him detained despite international rulings, while expelling French and later US forces. Niger joined Mali and Burkina Faso in the Alliance of Sahel States, left ECOWAS and nationalised parts of the uranium sector. Jihadist attacks in the tri-border region persist despite the coup's security promises.
