The military overturned the NLD's 2020 landslide in a February 2021 coup, jailing Aung San Suu Kyi and igniting a civil war that has cost tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. After phased elections that much of the country could not or would not vote in, Min Aung Hlaing converted his junta rule into the presidency in April 2026, while the parallel National Unity Government and ethnic armed organisations still control large areas. The 2025 Sagaing earthquake compounded a deep humanitarian crisis.
