Haiti has had no elected officials at any level since sitting senators' terms expired in January 2023, and the presidency has been empty since Jovenel Moïse's assassination in 2021. A transitional council governed from April 2024 until its mandate lapsed in February 2026 without an elected successor. Armed gangs control much of Port-au-Prince despite a Kenyan-led multinational security mission, making the August 2026 election timetable highly uncertain.
