Colonel Doumbouya overthrew Alpha Condé in 2021, and a September 2025 constitutional referendum cleared the way for his own candidacy despite earlier transition pledges barring junta members. Veteran opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Touré were kept off the ballot. Guinea holds the world's largest bauxite reserves and the giant Simandou iron deposit, which began exports in 2025.
