Traoré, who seized power in the second of two 2022 coups, leads a state fighting a jihadist insurgency that leaves large parts of the territory outside government control. Burkina Faso quit ECOWAS with Mali and Niger to form the Alliance of Sahel States and has aligned with Russia while expelling French forces. The young captain has cultivated a pan-Africanist following well beyond his borders.
